The Golden Triangle carries a dream of opium, smuggling and danger.
But today, no fear, you only visit the memories of it. You first make a beautiful trip to Doi Mae Salong, an area where descendants of Chinese immigrates now grow tea and corn instead of opium poppies. A magnificent landscape of mountains. Then you have a look at Mae Sai the northern city of the country, a “market city” where Thai, Burmese and hill tribes’ people trade, before reaching the Golden Triangle where Thailand, Lao and Myanmar meet.
A place where you enjoy a magnificent view on the Mekong and the surrounding country. Leaving the border you go to Chiang Rai and Wat Rung Khun, a modern white temple that does not let you indifferent, and Wat Phra Kaeo the most important temple of the city. On tour way to Chiang Mai, the Rose of the North, you make a stop at Mae Kachang hot spring.
This morning you take the road to Mae Chan. Along the way you make a stop in Thaton, a small village on the Mae Kok River dominated by a hill topped by a temple (Wat Thaton) where we see the whole valley. You will visit the Doi Mae Salong (doi in Northern language means mountain). Formerly Mae Salong was a center of the opium trade, led by Chinese refugees from 93rd regiment of the Kuomintang. To break this drug feud image, Mae Salong, which has kept its typical Chinese character, was officially renamed Santikiri “hill of peace.” Poppy crop substitution have been introduced by the Thai government. These efforts are bearing fruit, judging by the extent of plantations of tea and maize crops and the quantities of products sold in markets. You will then reach your hotel in Mae Chan. Built in the middle of rice fields at the foot of lovely hills this charming hotel is a haven of peace. The rustic beauty of Thailand with the comfort of a modern hotel.
This morning you drive to the Golden Triangle, with a short stop at the small town Mae Sai, on the border with Burma. Here you can photograph the northernmost point of Thailand. This city is essentially a huge and picturesque outdoor market where Thai, Burmese and hill tribes cross and trade. The Golden Triangle, at the Mekong, is the meeting point of Thailand, Burma and Laos (this name once defined a large poppy cultivation area in the three countries). You climb to the Wat Phra Pukhao temple to enjoy an exceptional view of the Mekong River.
You then take the road to Chiang Rai where you visit Wat Rong Khun, the white temple, an out of the ordinary contemporary temple, that will not leave you indifferent. Before going to your hotel, you make a small hike to the “Khun Korn” waterfall. With its 70 meters in height, it is the largest and undoubtedly the most spectacular of Chiang Rai.
This morning you visit the Wat Phra Kaeo temple, which is the most revered temple in the city and this for three reasons: its history, its architecture and its museum. You then take the road to Chiang Mai. Along the way, you make a short stop at Mae Kachang hot springs.
