Cambodia

A COUNTRY WITH A FABULOUS PAST, A LUSH NATURE, FANTASTIC PEOPLE

BOOK THIS DESTINATION AND DISCOVER CAMBODIA
To say that the Cambodian equation equals Angkor, one of the greatest civilizations of Southeast Asia, would be incomplete. This would be overlooking the impenetrable jungles, other abandoned temples covered by years and years of vegetation, the sometimes huge lakes, the splendid white sandy beaches bordering the Gulf of Siam and the smiling locals, although they recently came back from decades of suffering and massacres. At the heart of the Indochinese peninsula, located between Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, Cambodia has its central part shaped by the Mekong.

This is a slightly hilly alluvial plain enclosed by mountain ranges. Half the country is covered by rain forest. Because of the legacy of post-colonial wars, civil war and the Khmer Rouge regime that followed, it is one of the poorest countries of the peninsula. Like its neighbors, it is a country of monsoon and during the rainy season, the fertilizing flood of the Mekong river discharges into the Tonle Sap (Great Lake).

ANGKOR WAT A WONDERFUL ETERNAL MEMORY OF THE KHMER EMPIRE

At its peak, the Khmer kingdom had conquered most of the Indochinese peninsula. Stopping at the doors of mainland Burma, it included Thailand (with the exception of the independent Lanna kingdom in the northwest), Laos and South Vietnam. It stretched from Yunnan, in southern China, to Malaysia. It had to build a city representative of its power: Angkor. The Kingdom of Angkor covered the period from the 9th to the 13th century. It is generally considered that Jayavarman II was the king who began the construction of Angkor by a grand consecration ritual performed in 802 on the sacred Mount Mahendraparvata (Phnom Kulen today) to celebrate the independence of Kambuja of Javanese domination.

Angkor, the spiritual and cultural heart of Cambodia is today a huge archaeological site, classified as world heritage of UNESCO, it consists of a set of ruins and hydraulic installations (ponds and canals). Essential part of the site, Angkor Wat (“Temple of the Capital”), is a temple constituting the largest religious monument in the world. Initially a Hindu temple of the Khmer Empire, it gradually turned into a Buddhist temple in the late 12th century, since King Jayavarman VII had adopted this religion. If you could go see only one thing during your trip to Cambodia, go visit the set of marvels of art and architecture that is the Angkor site. You will return subdued.

TONLE SAP LAKE, AN ABORIGINAL LIVING STYLE AND BIRD SANCTUARY

DISCOVER THE LARGEST FRESHWATER AREA OF SOUTHEAST ASIA
Tonle Sap (literally “big unsalted river”) is a huge lake housed in a vast alluvial and floodable plain. It is connected to the Mekong by a 120 km long river through which the the annual floods flow back to the lake. The variation of the dimensions of this lake is enormous. Between dry and wet seasons, its surface changes from 2.500 to 16.000 square km and its volume increases from 1 to 80 cubic km. It then reaches a length of 250 km. As an anecdote, the houses on stilts that are at the edge of the water during the floods, find themselves 6-7 meters above the land during the dry season! The fertility due to these floods gives this region a central importance to the food supply in Cambodia.

It was a fundamental element in maintaining the Angkor civilization. Largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, Tonle Sap contains an exceptional amount of eco-interconnected regions enjoying a high degree of biodiversity. It was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1997. It is especially exciting to visit the Sanctuary of birds and the Prek Toal Biosphere, home to thousands of migratory birds, including several rare species such as the adjutant stork, the milky stork and the spot-billed pelican. The village of Prek Toal itself is floating and the residents fish by ancestral methods which they will be happy to explain to you. So many reasons to get to know these charming places during an exciting journey or entertaining excursion.
